Microsoft recently released its "modern" version of IE, Internet Explorer 9. This has been the first version upgrade in Microsoft's internet browser in years. This "advance" is tardy and inadequate. This is a whole new age in web design. CSS3 and HTML5 have revolutionized the way websites can be made, and IE9 comes up a little short. OK, let's take an honest look at how your accounting websites are going to affected by IE9.

Hardware Acceleration
The biggest improvement to IE9 is also the most useless to me as an accounting website designer. Still, in the interest of fairness and balance let's take a look at hardware acceleration. Hardware acceleration helps web pages display complex, interactive graphics. If you have ever played a Facebook game like Farmville, you'll notice that your browser will likely encounter lag or a drop in frames per second (FPS) when you were viewing an area of the game that had a lot of activity. With hardware acceleration this lag or drop in FPS should be reduced or not even happen!

IE9 now allows a graphics card (GPU) inside your computer to take some of the processing load off of the CPU. The result is much faster graphic performance. Prior to Internet Explorer 9, an IE browser did not use the GPU and this forced the CPU to take the full brunt of the processing. The CPU isn't really designed for graphics. It's really more of a glorified calculator, so letting the GPU pick up some of the processing load will open up a whole new world of interactive online animations. This is a great new feature for online gaming, but it really doesn't change the way we do online accounting or offer us any new functionality for storing and updating online data.

Got Vista?
Even if IE9 offers amazing benefits you may very well not be able to see them on your accounting websites yet. IE9 only works on Windows 7 and Vista. This is a big deal from a web designers point of view. XP is more than 40% of the market so a LOT of users can't benefit from the browsers new functionality. Windows Vista is almost unused with only 14% market share, and windows 7 only has about 26%. It makes no sense that IE9 won't work with XP. There are more XP users than Vista and Win 7 combined!

There doesn't seem to be any technical reason XP wouldn't support IE9's new features, so the only reason for this looks like "Built In Obsolescence". Of course the vast majority of XP users don't care about IE9. They won't be bullied into upgrading computers just to be able to view CSS3 styles. For the few that do care they can always just use a different browser. Current versions of Google Chrome and Firefox 10 both have hardware acceleration.

Epic Fail
There's no way to be nice about this. IE9's CSS3 support is a HUGE disappointment. CSS is a "style sheet language" that allows document standards like fonts, colors etc to be defined with defaults and standards specific to that document. CSS3 offers a lot of opportunities for us as website designers in terms of the aesthetics of your site. It allows us to do more with less code, making your online documents smaller, better looking, faster loading, and easier for search engines to index. IE9 has completely failed to deliver on CSS3 support. At best it could be called "partial support", but given Microsoft's resources and competitors the word "lame" seems more accurately descriptive. When Microsoft was boasting that IE9 works with HTML5 and CSS3, I was starting to think that Microsoft was getting with the times. Nope.

I'm sure new functionalities will trickle in as the browser is patched. Perhaps some already have. However, I see no excuse to why Microsoft couldn't integrate the properties of border image, text shadow, and gradients into IE9. These three elements alone could allow us to replace a lot of images that we're currently forced to use. This makes page files smaller, faster loading, and more readable to the search engines.

For shame, Microsoft. For shame.

Overall Take on IE9: Fail
OK, this is a better browser than IE8. That said, as an accounting website designer I'm VERY disappointed. I'm furious that they chose not to support XP; and they're not fooling anyone: this was a choice. The CSS3 support just made me wince. IE9 is only a marginal improvement, worth downloading and using if you're currently on IE8 but certainly not worthy of the fanfare it received and certainly not on par competing browsers with Firefox and Chrome.

I'm hoping that Microsoft has plans for improvement in the near future, but I rather doubt it. They're already hyping IE10. Once again they're using their new browser to trick unsuspecting users into upgrading their Operating System. They've announced that IE10 will only work on Win 7. I hope they reconsider this rogue move because I don't see millions of users spending hundreds of millions of dollars upgrading their hardware and/or software just so they can play Farmville without lagging, or see your new accounting websites in all their CSS3 glory.

For now IE is bound to stay a "granny browser". I am going to continue to advise my clients to download and use Firefox, but I'm keeping a close eye on Chrome...

We're just using the new standards (which other browsers DO support) and hoping that IE catches up at some point. CSS3 supports some seriously AWESOME design elements that IE9 just ignores like text shadows, border images, and gradients. There's just no good reason that these standards shouldn't have been included in the initial release. These three elements alone could allow us to replace a lot of images that we're currently forced to use. This makes page files smaller, faster loading, and more readable to the search engines.
